Internal Displacement:
Dynamics of Policy, Projects and Administration Nexus

The Journal of Internal Displacement is calling for papers to be published as a Special Issue in its January 2026 volume. Papers must be submitted no later than 15 October 2025 (Extended Deadline).

Internal displacement is a contentious issue among scholars, practitioners, and administrators, as it involves individuals who leave their homes due to situations beyond their control. Situations compelling displaced persons to leave their places of habitual residence are disasters, climate change, harsh environmental conditions, development projects (e.g., natural mineral extraction and mining), economic hardship, corporate expansion, (neo)liberal globalisation (e.g., capitalism, deregulation, privatisation, and reduced government intervention), (re/de)colonial violence, war, conflicts, human rights violations, projects or austerity policies enacted by government administration. While some internally displaced persons (IDPs) are not citizens, many are nationals of their home states, where governments are unable or unwilling to protect them. States’ failure to protect IDPs is further aggravated by the “silent treatment” and lack of awareness of the plight of internally displaced persons in comparison to the legal status of refugees and asylum seekers. The interplay betweenpolicies and projects implemented by government administration often overshadows the challenges and needs faced by IDPs. Policy response, initiative or interventions aiming at durable solutions to promote a more standardised approach in addressing IDPs concerns frequently encounter obstacles that tend to be compromised by administrative loopholes. Such complex structures can only be effectively challenged by employing evidence-based research to inform policy reform regarding effective protection of IDPs.

Sub-themes may include (but not limited to):

• Policy guidelines (country/region-specific) and internal displacement dynamics.
• Development projects versus community/individual and internal displacement.
• Internal displacement and solutions and administrative response.
• Issues, challenges and policy solutions pertinent to human/animal conflict internal displacement.
• Issues, challenges and policy solutions with respect to conflict-induced displacement.
• Concerns for the future with respect to climate, environment and disasters internal displacement.
• Ethnicity, culture, geography, and internal displacement
• Social/Environment impact assessment for development projects and internal displacement
• Social problems, marginalisation, and related health concerns in disaster induced internal displacement
• Intersections of climate, environment, economic, corporate, development, big-tech, mining, (re/de)colonisation and other forms of induced internal displacement.
• Displacement, advocacy, resistance, resilience and policy response.
• Displacement and risk to people with disabilities, the elderly, Indigenous Peoples, children, women, LGBTQ, and other marginalised groups.

About the Journal: The Journal of Internal Displacement (JID) is the only scholarly and interdisciplinary platform for raising the profile of displaced populations through discussions, critical dialogue, emerging themes, reflections and explorations on a wide range of topics and geographical regions. The JID promotes free and open access. The JID charges no publication fees to authors.

Submission Guidelines:

• All manuscript must be submitted electronically via the JID website.
• All manuscripts must conform to JID Author’s Guidelines.
• All Manuscripts must be between 15-30 pages (i.e., ~7,500 – 15,000 words), including references.
• Deadline for submission is 15 October 2025 (Extended Deadline).
