Disasters and Displacement in Canada
Special Issue: January 2027
The Journal of Internal Displacement is calling for papers to be published as a Special Issue in its January 2027 volume. A 250-word abstract must be submitted no later than 30 December 2025 with full papers to be submitted for a virtual workshop by 31 March 2026.
From hurricanes, tsunamis, wildfires, to earthquakes, droughts, and flooding, climate disasters be them natural and/or human-induced have impacted millions of people in every region of the world. The situation is no different in Canada, where evacuations and air quality indices have become all too common during the wildfire season that increasingly runs from April to October. This special issue considers the nature of disasters and displacement in Canada, historically and in the present. While acknowledging environmental disasters disproportionately impact Indigenous communities in Canada, this special issue explores various forms of disasters in Canada and their influence on human life from emergency response procedures to humanitarian aid across different communities, from Indigenous communities living in Northern and coastal regions to diasporic communities living in Canada.
Of interest to this special issue is the role of migration and diasporic connections in shaping the history of disaster responses in Canada. How have impacted communities responded to disasters either in their homelands or across the diaspora through displacement and dislocation? As climate disasters worsen alongside weakened policies and response procedures, this special issue aims to provide a critical intervention in disaster studies by drawing attention to disasters and displacement within a Global North context.
Submission
Authors are invited to submit a 250-word abstract outlining their subject and methodological approach by 30 December 2025. Abstracts will be reviewed by 30 January 2026. If accepted for publication, full papers (7,500 – 10,000-word count) are due by 31 May 2026. The Guest Editors will then convene a virtual workshop to explore cross-cutting themes June/July exact dates TBD. Revised papers will be submitted for peer review by 1 August 2026 for publication in the January 2027 volume of the Journal of Internal Displacement.
Case studies, historical or contemporary, are especially encouraged. Sub-themes may include (but are not limited to):
- Indigenous studies
- Diasporic studies
- Refugee studies
- Critical border analysis, displacement, disaster, and dislocation histories
- Policy analysis (e.g. environmental sciences, humanitarian aid and relief, health and family, etc.)
- Transnationalism, nationalism, Canadian studies, settler colonialism
- Wildlife/animal welfare
About the Journal of Internal Displacement
The Journal of Internal Displacement (JID) is the only scholarly and interdisciplinary platform for raising the profile of displaced populations through discussions, critical dialogue, emerging themes, reflections and explorations on a wide range of topics and geographical regions. The JID promotes free and open access, as such, it charges no publication fees to authors. The JID is indexed by AJOL and EBSCO.
Submission Guidelines
- All 250-word abstracts must be submitted to fynnbruey@journalofinternaldisplacement.org by 30 December 2025
- All full manuscript for accepted abstracts must be submitted by 31 May 2026.
- All full manuscript must clearly state submission is for the “Disasters and Displacement in Canada” Special Issue.
- All full manuscript must be submitted electrically via the JID website.
- All manuscripts must conform to JID Author’s Guidelines.
- All manuscripts must be between 13 – 30 pages (i.e. ~7500 – 10,000 words)
