Borno targets 1 million internally displaced persons with house-to-house lifesaving messages: “Why didn’t you educate us before cholera hit us last year?” asked Hauwa Bulama, an internally displaced person (IDP) at Muna garage of Maiduguri, Borno state where an outbreak of cholera affected thousands of people in 2017.

Darfur lawyers call for international pressures to protect displaced persons: The Darfur Bar Association (DBA) Thursday called on the international community to press Sudanese government to abide by its commitments and to cease attacks on displaced persons in Darfur.

Rohingya refugee held on Manus Island dies in motor vehicle incident: Asylum Seeker Resource Centre says man suffered head injuries after being seen ‘coming out of a moving vehicle.’ A Rohingya refugee has died in a violent motor vehicle incident on Manus Island. The man was witnessed “coming out of a moving vehicle”, according to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, and suffered “very serious head injuries”.

Punishing Syrian refugees and displaced persons: The Syrian regime has added yet another draconian weapon to its already long list of arsenals against the opposition by recently issuing a decree aiming to confiscate movable and immovable properties belonging to people regarded as members of the opposition.

De Lima pleads for Marawi internally displaced persons: As the nation marks the first anniversary of the Marawi siege, Senator Leila de Lima called on the Duterte administration to expedite humanitarian assistance to home-based and evacuation center-based internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Marawi City and nearby municipalities.

Hirakud displacement: NHRC Special Rapporteur to Probe: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has deputized its special rapporteur to investigate the issue of large-scale displacement and subsequent failure of the State Government in rehabilitation and resettlement of more than 26,000 families due to the construction of the Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur.

UNMISS acknowledges return of over 10,000 Wau displaced persons to their homes: UNMISS in Wau State says it has witnessed the return of Displaced Persons sheltering near its base and all the collective sites to their homes.

Internal Displacement – 20 years of Action: In 2016 more than 31 million people were displaced in 125 countries by conflict, violence and disasters. Internal displacement uproots people from their homes, depriving them of their jobs, basic health and security services, and separates them from their families and friends.

UN launches global plan to strengthen protection of internally displaced persons: With multiple crises forcing millions of people away from their homes, United Nations agencies, Governments and partners have launched a set of measures to strengthen protection of internally displaced persons as well as find solutions to address their problems.

IDMC Internal Displacement Update Issue 32 (8 March – 4 April 2018: As many as 40,000 people were displaced internally between 10 and 15 March in Moyale area in Oromia when the Ethiopian army overran the area in a retaliation attack. The aim of the military operation was to find those responsible for attacking a military truck that had passed through the region.

Myanmar state counselor reiterates readiness to receive displaced people fleeing Rakhine conflict: Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has reiterated the government’s readiness to receive back displaced persons fleeing Rakhine conflict to Bangladesh after verification, calling for cooperation with the Bangladesh side to expedite the repatriation process, according to the foreign ministry Tuesday.

Iraq after the Americans: Following the US troop withdrawal, Fault Lines went to assess the state of Iraq after nine years of occupation.

Yemen: Al Hudaydah / Taizz Displacemen: More than 10,000 people have died in the Yemen war which has now entered into its fourth year. The campaign by the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi rebels has seen more than 16,633 air raids launched across the country since March 26, 2015.

Migrants, refugees, displaced people chosen for ‘Washing of the Feet’ rites: Migrants, refugees, and displaced people whose feet will be washed by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle during Holy Thursday’s “Washing of the Feet” ceremony, will symbolize the endeavor for peace and the challenging conditions that keep peace from many people living in very difficult situations.

Displaced Kurds from Afrin Need Help, Activist says: Kurds often say they have “no friends but the mountains.” However, after the Turkish and Syrian rebel offensive took over most of the Kurdish area of Afrin in northern Syria in the last two months, they’ve been saying even the mountains cannot protect them against Turkish warplanes.

Colombia: Increased internal displacement in Colombia: In Caceres, Colombia, 1,484 people have been displaced as a result of violence between armed groups. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) urgently calls for the protection of the indigenous and rural populations who have been seriously affected by the recent violence.

World Migration Report: 2018: This World Migration Report 2018 is the ninth in the series. Since 2000, IOM has been producing world migration reports to contribute to increased understanding of migration throughout the world. This new edition presents key data and information on migration as well as thematic chapters on highly topical migration issues.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PAPERS

11^th International Conference on Migration and Development
The French Development Agency (AFD) Research Department, the World Bank Development Research Group (DECRG), and the Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development are jointly organizing the 11th International Conference on “Migration and Development” on July 5 and 6, 2018. The conference is devoted to investigating ways in which international migration affects economic and social change in developing countries. Possible topics include the effects of migration on poverty, inequality, and human capital formation; social networks and migration; diaspora externalities; remittances; brain drain; migration and institutional/technological/demographic change, today and in the past. Mali: UN Migration Agency Reports Rise in Displacement in Northern Mali: Despite a drop in numbers towards the end of 2017 – from 40,743 individuals in October to just over 38,100 in December­ – latest figures show an additional 8,164 displaced persons have registered in the regions of Mopti, Menaka, Timbuktu and Gao.

USA: City to Bushwick: Displacement Not Our Problem: At a meeting about the neighborhood’s community-led rezoning plan, residents say the city dismissed their biggest concerns.

Colombia: Increased internal displacement in Colombia: In Caceres, Colombia, 1,484 people have been displaced as a result of violence between armed groups. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) urgently calls for the protection of the indigenous and rural populations who have been seriously affected by the recent violence.

Challenging Migrant Detention: Human Rights, Advocacy and Mental Health
As forcible displacement increases, notions of the unwanted “Other”, the “illegal” migrant, and the “bogus” refugee are increasingly prominent in public discourse of destination countries, lending support to stringent border control policies whereby states incarcerate asylum seekers, undocumented migrants and other foreign nationals in immigration detention centres, prisons and camps. This structural violence primarily targets racialized populations from the Global South. This international conference brings together researchers in social sciences, human rights and mental health, along with practitioners, advocates and migrants, to discuss global trends and avenues for change in immigration detention. Call for papers deadline is 1 February 2018. Design History Society 2018: Design and Displacement
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that in 2016, some 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide – a number not seen since the end of World War II. On average, 20 people were driven from their homes every minute. The challenges faced by vast numbers of migrants and refugees uprooted by war, persecution, ecological crises, natural disasters, or even relocating in search of economic opportunity, are often urgent, and, unfortunately, all too familiar. The movement of populations has spurred – and continues to spur – great changes in the cultural landscape in general and design in particular, both positive and problematic. Displacement creates opportunities for cross-cultural dialogues and inspires design solutions, whether they be related to objects used for disaster relief, temporary housing for displaced persons during wartime or following natural disasters, or more substantial and lasting interventions into the landscape, such as the exponential and necessary growth of cities. Taking place from 6-8 September 2018, this conference will examine displacement and attendant issues from a design perspective. More information available here.

Sculptor Kapoor awards $1 million ‘Jewish Nobel’ prize to refugees by Karla Mendes: British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor donated $1 million to five charities working with refugees worldwide in a bid to alleviate a record-breaking global displacement crisis.

Benue Killings: 80,000 internally displaced persons registered: The Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, says it has registered about 80,000 Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, across four camps located in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state.

Almost 1.5 million internally displaced persons registered in Ukraine by Interfax-Ukraine: As of Jan. 9, 1,492,100 internally displaced persons are registered in Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine reported.

The Persistent Reality of Forced Migration

It appears trite to proclaim the relevance of forced migration. It is, without doubt, a defining aspect of our time, with its impacts felt acutely across the globe. Indeed, the current scale of forced migration is without precedent. Those who are compelled to leave their homes often undertake dangerous journeys in the hope of reaching relative safety, yet are too often received with suspicion, hostility and exclusion. While the immediacy of the situation is clear to see, experience has shown that such immediacy can swiftly turn to intractability, bringing with it a sense of permanence and seeming inevitability. Deadly Voyages
Migrants the world over have been compelled to make deadly voyages to escape harsh conditions in pursuit of a better life. Whether it is a fatal journey made by “Boat People” to Australia; migrants desperately crossing the Mediterranean; Syrian refugees converging at the frontiers of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt; or unaccompanied minors from “Northern Triangle” nations trekking thousands of miles to enter the United States via Mexico; their vulnerability is certain. Many fall prey to traffickers, smugglers, violence, exploitation and death. For instance, Amnesty International reports that, at the current rate of 2.7 deaths per every 100 people, 2017 promises to be the deadliest year for refugees crossing the Mediterranean. Despite the increasing number of deaths of forced migrants, international law and communities struggle with coordinating socio-legal and humanitarian efforts to effectively address the global migrant crisis. The purpose of this forthcoming book is to examine the efficacy of international, regional, national and local responses to deadly voyages of forced migrants globally. Interested authors should send a title (12 words maximum); brief description of your proposed chapter (300-500 words maximum); and a CV to veronica.fynnbruey@tuki-tumarankeh.org no later than 30 November 2017.
